UNICEF Freedom of Thought Poster

I came across this photograph of a beautiful little orphan girl taken by Noel Gomski (who granted his permission to use this shot). You can see his other photos on Flickr.

Children have the right to freedom of thought and this includes about religious matters.

It seems that religion always gets a free pass on this issue, yet I wonder how many more people would become upset if parents raised their children specifically to be right-wing Republicans or liberal Democrats. I suppose the problem is that politics are understood to be ones personal opinion while religion is understood to constitute and absolute true understanding of the world that has consequences that extend beyond the grave.

I just clicked the link to the original blog, and it says it has been removed (!)

Well, that was unexpected! Thanks.

If we really respect children we will listen to them and not as a matter of parental prerogative override their wishes when it comes to issues like religion. The choices we make about religion, even for children, are personal and are inalienable.
